This Summer’s Hottest Coffee Is Served Cold: SAGE Appliances Brings Back the Affogato

It takes ten seconds, and it only works if the espresso underneath is actually good

There is a version of summer dessert that skips the oven entirely: one shot of hot espresso poured straight over a scoop of cold gelato, gone in under a minute, looking far more impressive than the effort it took. The Affogato has quietly become one of the easiest wins on a summer table, equally at home as a dinner party finish or a solo Tuesday treat, and its whole appeal rests on one thing nobody can fake, a genuinely good shot of espresso underneath the ice cream. That is where SAGE Appliances comes in, the global coffee machine brand, built on turning real barista technique into something anyone can do at home.

The affogato does not forgive a weak or bitter shot, which makes it a surprisingly good test of a home machine. When the extraction is right, the whole thing tastes like a café dessert menu. It’s a simple, low-effort way to see a machine at its best, and it happens to double as the easiest dessert of the season.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces vanilla gelato or ice cream
  • 1 fluid ounce espresso, freshly pulled
  • 1 teaspoon dark chocolate, shaved (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon toasted hazelnuts, crushed (optional)

Steps

  1. Chill the glass: Pop a small glass or coupe in the freezer for a few minutes while you get everything else ready. A cold glass keeps the gelato from melting too fast once the espresso hits it.
  2. Scoop the gelato: Add 2 ounces of vanilla gelato or ice cream to the chilled glass. Vanilla is classic, but pistachio or hazelnut gelato works just as well if that is what is in the freezer.
  3. Pull the shot: Pull 1 fluid ounce of espresso, freshly pulled of espresso. This is the part that actually makes or breaks an affogato, so it is worth using a machine that gets the extraction right rather than rushing it.
  4. Pour it over: Pour the hot espresso straight over the gelato immediately, while it is still hot. Do not stir; let the two temperatures do their thing on their own.
  5. Finish and serve: Top with 1 teaspoon dark chocolate, shaved (optional), and 1 teaspoon toasted hazelnuts, crushed (optional) if using, and serve right away with a small spoon.

The whole thing takes under a minute once the espresso is pulled, which is exactly why it works so well as a last-minute summer dessert.

The Oracle Dual Boiler

AED 9,999

True to its name, it brews and steams milk at the same time on two separate boilers, so nobody is left waiting for the second half of their order. A dual-screen setup lets one person dial in every detail manually while someone else gets a fully automated café order from the same machine. The integrated grinder and Sage’s 4 Keys Formula handle dose, temperature, and pressure automatically, so even the manual side never strays far from a proper extraction.
